Hereditary Footprint

Hereditary Footprint is a creative exploration of our carbon heritage. An immersive theatre piece playing with time and local history.

Imagine a typical 1860s pit village - coal at the centre of everything. But a new resident of the village - an eminent scientist and writer - is sharing alarming stories about carbonic acid in the air, and how it will harm the world. The village is buzzing with debate - should we, do we, could we leave the coal in the ground?

We will explore our relationship with the earth, the past we inherit, the future we build together.

Foregrounding the history of coal miners fighting for fair pay, decent housing and safer working conditions, we will tell a story for communities about how their ancestors’ collective action made a different future possible.

A partnership of cultural, heritage, and education organisations are coming together to make opportunities for more people to explore these ideas. To unearth powerful climate stories through art, theatre, writing, and science.
